Volume 3: Winter 2016
EDITOR’S
CONCLUSION & PARTINGWORDS Mat Wilkinson Three seasons, three volumes, over fiftywriters and artists printed .In this volume – our volume of ‘encounters’ – we were again overwhelmed by the quality of Freiburg’s creativity, and were absolutely thrilled (and honoured and humbled) by having Rafik Schami, one of Germany’s most prominent writers, agree to an interview . His tips for aspiring writers, as well as Ishmael Reed’s wisdom in Volume 2, have certainly provided some insight into the writing life that so many of us aspire to. Perhaps that is a good mix for ‘little’ magazines: a little bit of wisdom from those in the know, a lot of space for those still trying to figure it out. For me as editor, the most rewarding aspect of producing The Freiburg Review has been publishing new writers who , without the magazine, might have left their stories and poetry sit idly on their hard drives or in their notebooks , or might not have even had the incentive to produce anything at all . An added bonus has been finding out that some of these writers have gone on to publish their work in other magazines and journals . If this magazine can provide the stepping-stone, perhaps one day these writers will be the Rafik Schamis and Ishmael Reeds handing down advice to the new learners of tomorrow. The Freiburg Review certainly has its role to play. As for me, it’s time I stepped down from my role as Editor. With my MA thesis printed, bound, and dried, home (Australia) is calling. Before I sail off, I’d like to say thank you to all the members of the magazine for all their help along the way, from pinning posters to querying the syntax of submissions. My biggest thanks, however, must go to our Managing Editor, Sophie Mathieu, for her never-ending enthusiasm. Without Sophie, this magazine would not exist. And to you, dear reader, thank you for being part of the magazine’s early days. |
