Volume 1: Winter 2015
EDITOR'S
INTRODUCTION Mat Wilkinson There are voices waiting to be heard in Freiburg: stories from Freiburg’s locals, stories from the city’s ever increasing international population. If only a platform existed that catered to these diverse and intermingling groups. If only a literary magazine allowed German and English speaking writers who aren’t necessarily German or English a platform to express their thoughts, stories, and dreams. With these questions in mind one Freiburg summer afternoon, a group of aspiring local writers dreamed up the idea for a bilingual literary magazine, and The Freiburg Review was born. Quick to get things moving, we became advertisers as we pinned hundreds of posters around the city and left thousands of flyers in local cafés asking for submissions. After a nervous three month wait (nervous because we didn’t know if there’d be enough to fill the magazine), we were thrilled to receive close to one hundred and fifty submissions. In keeping with the magazine’s bilingual nature, we were humbled that these included an equal share of German and English writers. We then became editors, the excellent quality of submissions creating a welcome dilemma in deciding what to publish. In the end, we’ve put together a magazine with flash fiction, poetry, memoir, family history, short stories, and photography, and are delighted to introduce fifteen new writers and a photographer from as far and wide (and close) as Germany, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Australia, and the United States. Thank you to all the contributors, submitters, editors, readers, and helpers for ensuring that a few afternoon ideas became a reality. Joining a long line of literary magazines from the Edinburgh Review and Granta in the UK, to The Paris Review and McSweeney’s in the US, to Meanjin and the Griffith Review in Australia. The Freiburg Review, a bilingual literary magazine that provides a creative outlet for Freiburg’s homegrown and international writers, hopes to celebrate the city’s divergent voice through its many, many stories. |
